Virginia > The Rue des Bluets is safe and well lit at night and we have always been comfortable returning home by subway or on foot after midnight. Yes, that's a trash truck working its way up the street..
Virginia > This is "our" boulangère who, with her husband and the help of her daugher, runs a boulangerie around the corner on Boulevard de Ménilmontant. Be warned. The croissants you buy here are huge, buttery and addictive. To get there, turn left on Ménilmentant and walk towards Oberkampf for about one block. The boulangerie is on the corner on the left. It is closed on Wednesdays but you can always buy extra on Tuesday and pop them into the freezer to be thawed for breakfast the next day.
Virginia > The nearby Saint Maur métro stop is on the number 3 line. There is an unattended entrance at the intersection of the Rue des Bluets and the Avenue de la République. Take ithe subway in the direction of Pont de Levallois, change at Réaumur-Sebastapol and you can be on the Ile de la Cité or the left bank in 20 minutes. One word of caution, though. If you need to buy a ticket you will want to enter the métro at the main entrance across the street and down a block to the right.
Virginia > Giant advertising posters on the walls of the métro change weekly. Watching the efficient paper hangers put up new posters is fascinating.
Virginia > This exit from the Saint Maur station delivers you to the foot of the Rue des Bluets. There are 62 stair steps from the subway platform to the street level. For those who do not like stairs, there is an escalator to deliver you to the other side of the Avenue the République. Our family is divided on which is the better alternative after a long day.
Virginia > Another close-by métro stop is Ménilmontant at the intersection of the Boulevard and Rue Oberkampf.
Virginia > This métro poster commemorates artists who came from the simple working class areas of Belleville and Ménilmontant -- Maurice Chevalier, Edith Piaf and the song writer George Trenet. Piaf and Trenet are buried in the nearby Pere Lachaise cemetery.
Virginia > Ménilmontant subway entrance, just a few minutes from the apartments . The stop is on the No. 2 line with end points at Nation and Porte Dauphine. It is the best choice if you are headed for Montmartre.
Virginia > At the bus stop near the Ménilmontant métro entrance, you can pick up the 96 bus for a picturesque ride through the city with stops in the Marais, at the Hotel de Ville, on the Ile de la Cité and on the left bank. The line's end point is the Gare Montparnasse.
